I still didn’t feel this way about Emily. In my eyes it felt equal in every which way until the end.

Gabby dealing with cutting. She came back though.
Evidently Emily wasn’t in a good place mentally. But neither was I. Yet I was still trying.

Idk if i inherently agree with this statement that it’s fluid. I think maybe somewhere in between maybe? Like a jelly?
It ebbs and flows but if it was so fluid it would t be so jarring and hurtful when it ends I feel like.

So far I am very much appreciating the anecdotes and also appreciating the analysis, but I really do not like the sections where she gives little bullet points of advice on how to keep friendships going. They seem glib and not that like the kind of thing that will actually get to the heart of the issue, which is not really like the tone of the rest of the book. It's almost like someone suggested she add these sections

The observations and studies about women and their friendship numbers is very intriguing

The description of the breakdown of friendship levels and hierarchy is almost exactly like mine. I added two more levels that differentiate closeness and context

Last para if pg: I wonder if this is in reference to friendships in general or best friends specifically. My experience is already telling me that best friends are rare, so it stands to reason that the hypothesis of losing best friends for a single individual all the time is more common than realized, isn’t inherently true.

Should I have not told Emily that Kenji was a jerk? Let her come to that conclusion herself? Would it have prevented the end of the friendship? But it felt like the right thing to do because you should be able to be honest with your friends and want to protect them.
How would I know whether this is the right course of action in the future?

Why is it fully rational and expected for a marriage to last but not a friendship? Why is it fully expected for a friendship to fall apart and not last but a marriage is?
The roots are essentially the same, just levels of attraction.

This book is so dated: “The average young person who is connected to digital technology has 94 numbers on her cell phone, 78 people on her instant messenger list, and 86 friends in her social networking community.”
