“You didn’t have to drive all the way up to Walter Reed to get me,” Evan said. “One of the guys could’ve driven me home.”
“No way,” Alison laughed. “You’re mine, and I don’t share.” Evan chuckled beside her. “Damn, woman, what’s gotten into you?”
“Hopefully just you,” she teased, her green eyes lighting with fire.

She didn’t even know if he was the man hurt. All she needed was to hear his voice, and she’d be fine. Scratch that—all she needed was to know that he’d be okay. If he didn’t want to be with her after the way she’d flipped out on him, she’d understand. He just needed to be okay.

The meaning of Ali’s text suddenly dawned on him. She thought he’d been with another woman the other night? For the love of God. If she kept jumping to conclusions, no way in hell would this work between them. Was she expecting him to chase her all the way over to her townhouse? He’d just tried calling a few minutes ago, and she hadn’t answered.

What the hell was the woman so afraid of? She’d been more than happy to be swept into his arms and carried off to bed. But the moment he’d held her close, tried to be more than just some guy who’d gone down on her, she’d panicked. Froze him out.

“Ali,” Evan murmured, bending down and lifting her into his arms. She was small and completely perfect for him. Her lips were swollen, ripe from his kisses. Her cheeks were flushed. And the way she gazed up at him right now? Hell. He’d do just about anything to see her look at him that way every day for the rest of their lives.

He would love to have a yard to mow, grill to throw some steaks/ burgers on, and a wife and kids to come home to. He’d never envied the other men on his SEAL team before, but hell if he wouldn’t love for his life to mirror Patrick’s. The single life had suited Evan just fine for the first 27 years of his life, but lately, seeing other men with wives and families had made his gut clench just a little bit in envy.

When she did find the right guy, she knew he’d be older. Established. Have a house of his own, a career, and be ready to start a family. She didn’t have time for games with boys. Cute as though he was, she shouldn’t even waste time thinking of Evan anymore.

I cannot believe how many many assumptions she is making & how she is judging him without even asking him how old he is or if he is interested in settling down!!!!

This guy certainly wasn’t looking to settle down. He was big but looked only 25 or so, and she didn’t date younger men. She’d made that mistake once and had her heart broken when she realized they were at completely different stages of their lives.

Evan wished he could’ve heard what made her laugh like that. What he wouldn’t do to hear that sound again and again. It was light and carefree, sweet, and feminine. It filled his chest with a stirring he couldn’t even begin to describe and seeped deep inside him, lighting his entire body with awareness and desire.
