<… I couldn’t help but feel Merrick used Jace to fill his lonliness and even though he told “Daniel” he wouldn’t be replaced… he basically did. This novella felt like a personal exercise of moving on rather than a complete or cohesive story. — 1.5

Perhaps it was the pacing, perhaps it was the curtness in the writing, perhaps it was a lack of descriptive situations that I felt little to no empathy for wither characters. Jace had no character development or backstory and I struggled to understand how he came to like Merrick or how he was loved in return….>

The progression feels so rushed and I can’t understand why Merrick keeps interacting with this person who confuses him. Jace also
feels a bit flat and not all that charming in words, but we are continually told how charming his is — 2
