Status Updates From The Dog Star

I have just begun and within pages? paragraphs? I knew that I was in love - one of the great beauties of reading is the discovery of something wonderful, something more than a work that moves emotionally, a work that is true and honest.

Forgive my exuberant twaddle but I can't resist. I knew Windham was exceptional when I read his 'Two People' and 'Dog Star' confirms it. He is a forgotten treasure.

He cursed the mother who brought him into this world, the city into which he had been born, the friends who had betrayed him by either encouragement or opposition, the strangers he had known-but most often he cursed them all at once:
-The bastards, the bastards,the bastards, the bastards, the bastards.

Blackie struggles with what he thinks is cool and rebellious and being a responsible person.He isn't even nice. It is almost like he has a split personality. I suppose he is like many teenagers who want to seem cool and aloof and want their independence but don't want to have to exert too much energy to get it i.e. getting a real job etc. He wants everything the easy way but he makes it all so hard.

Blackie sat with the other workmen in the distant seats of the bleachers where cigar and cigarette smoke fouled his clothing and turned the air so blue and heavy that it was hard for him to breathe. But he liked this. The fight seemed to him an example of the way life should be, the action clearly determined, the goal known and capable of being obtained...

This book is just okay so far but will see how it goes as I get more into the story.
