I wasn’t at all expecting this to go this way.

Lord I really do not love Alexander. He’s so pretentious and literally afraid/against getting down in the dirt and using his hands to pull weeds, “like [his] gardener.” 🙄

In the last book I didn’t mind the love between Alexander and Wynter but this book I am not at all here for it. He has a damn man baby.

And we’re off! I’m just really hoping it goes in the direction that I want, only time will tell!

Wynter is an idiot. She admits she can use magic, then seconds later says she's a fraud and not a mage and... argh. Make up your mind, sweetie.

Those sudden changes in characters and writing style mid-scene are getting in the way of a fun YA story. I *really* like this magical dystopia/heist/YA academy lite, but the differences indicated between the *** that break up scenes are getting difficult to ignore.

OK, dual authorship on show straight away: we're picking up the second after the end of book one, and despite Wynter telling Alex what she was about to do to save their lives and having him grab and shriek at her, he's "forgotten", is shocked when she tells him (again) and has moved to grab her to say something completely different. I really liked book one but this sort of thing gets me down.
