Mages, evil kings, sorcerers .... young Reya was not prepared to return home one day to find her house burned to the ground - with her father inside it. But rule is when the Bookweaver dies, the next of kin has his powers transferred onto them. Reya has to deal with grief and uncontrollable powers all while protecting her best friend as they run from an evil king who wants to use Reya's powers for himself.

Is... is that wise? I mean I can see how it could *work*, but those are *extremely high stakes.* She has rare skills, and a legacy to protect which would be precious in the world they're trying to make. Is it completely responsible to risk that?

...well crap. Perhaps I should have seen that coming.
Also, *sixteen*? I suddenly find myself concerned for the antagonist - he's definitely displaying cruelty but he's also basically a child who was raised to this. And everyone knows his place in his family depends on his behavior, that's a lot of pressure.

I... I was initially bracing for the Renegades to betray them, I thought the coincidence of their meeting was too *easy,* but I'm starting to really hope they don't. I *like* their bonding. I like that Reya has somebody she trusts to share her grief.
