“The fundamental wrong is the system that allows us to view animals as our resources, here for us to be eaten, or surgically manipulated, or exploited for sport/money. Once we accept this view of them the rest is as predictable as it is regrettable. Why worry about their loneliness, their pain, their death? Animals exist for us, to benefit us, what harms them only matters when it starts to bother our appetite”

I loved Robert waldaus essay on religion and animals. This is something I've been interested in for a while, and it gave a very succinct starting point.

Very thought provoking book so far. I found chapter 4 hard to follow, as I don't really know much about the history of philosophy. I'm looking forward to chapter 5 though. Religion and animals is a particular area of interest of mine.
