these bumps of fate are life or death for Sheever... he has some choices for sure, to decide his future. He is also haunted by the past, quite literally.

His relationships with the past, his unknowing of his future, and the people who he has (unknowingly) let into his world is all making his choices difficult. Also the recurring theme of faith and the soul.

The entire social structure of the world is fascinating, and all of the cultures. Uttes and Vics, Mearans and Verdis, Soms and Drays… if I’m being honest, it’s kind of hard to keep track of how RICH this place is with its histories and laws, but Sheever’s memories of youth as well as his present predicament keep me hyper-involved with the story.

I have no idea where this is going either, very exciting!

I'm overwhelmed with how much I'm loving this. At once a day-to-day, slice of life diary of a cynical man in a situation far below what he's used to, and also a fantasy-mystery with a world far bigger than what we are shown on the page. Sheever's self-loathing and penance mixed with his humor and egalitarian nature is refreshing. He's very funny and serious, his life a matter of magic, guilt, and wisdom.

I LOVE IT WHEN MY FANTASY HAS DEEP LORE! LIKE I'M JUST THROWN RIGHT IN HERE IN A LAND WITH SO MUCH HISTORY AND CULTURE AND SPIRITUAL ACTIVITY AND IM JUST LEARNING AS I GO AND I LOOOOOVE IT!!!

the language is deliberate, funny, and also disquieting at times. Sheever knows a lot more than he's letting on; these Snake Kinsman folk are fascinating too. RICH WORLD RICH STORY CAN I GET A HELLL YEAH

I've wanted to read this for years, I've always heard it's styled unlike any other fantasy novel.
So far I'm loving it, the diary entries are intruiging and the mystery of Sheever and why he hates this city is great!

This was a bitch and a half to find though. Had to inter library loan it lol, I'll make sure to be extra careful with my copy!
