I feel that a common theme of this book is the hedonism of simplifying complexities. Charles displays this in the way he prepares food, fully enjoying simply prepared ingredients. It also shows in the way he reduces Ben and Hartley’s complex marriage into a situation where she is manipulated by an evil husband, the reason being that Ben has been jealous of Charles, who reveles in the idea of being a righteous hero.
