فى سنة 1501 م تمكن إسماعيل الرئيس الشاب لطريقة من الدراويش الآذربيجانيين ، معتمداً على مساندة قبائل تركمانية متنقلة من الاستيلاء على الحكم فى إيران و منح نفسه اللقب الفارسى القديم " شاهنشاه " أو ملك الملوك . و كان إسماعيل مؤسس الأسرة الملكية الصفوية التى حكمت إيران حتى سنة 1722 م

بل إن الشريف الرضى المنحدر من نسل على و الأئمة كان يشغل منصب نائب الخليفة السنى بصفته القاضى الأعلى الذى ينظر فى شكاوى المواطنين ضد تجاوزات السلطة و له الفضل فى جمع جميع خطب و رسائل و مواعظ الإمام على فى كتاب " نهج البلاغة " و هو كتاب لم يزل حتى الآن ينال إعجاب السنة أيضاً كنموذج للنثر العربى الكلاسيكى .
