“So thats when I became a girl,at a time when gender bending was encouraged&celebrated, but homophobia still reigned. These cool straight girls of the early 00s made me believe that being a tomboy has absolutely nothing to do with your sexuality. This is what happens when gender bending is celebrated but being queer is frowned upon.It kept me in the closet long after I should”

I do like her writing styles&such, but she’s also a bit repetitive. How many times does she say she wants a girlfriend BEFORE coming out,to be her coming out in her essay?I think in part that’s why I hate labels,it shouldn’t be this hard to be authentically yourself, but our media&headlines can shape so much of our younger selves
TG weve come a long way since Ellen’s Puppy episode

“Homosexuality is like alcoholism,he told us.He explained a person can be genetically predisposed towards drug abuse.Like Augustus+masturbation,he can resist the urge to drink.Augustus’s mother is Saint Monica;the patron saint of alcoholics.Similarly, one might have the urge to smooch someone of the same gender.Apparently conceding that homosexuality is not a choice,so theres that i guess…”

Her love for HP,finding Mean Girls to be an instant classic/obsession while it took awhile to reach cult status w/everyone else. Her obsession with Road Rules(a young Theo Von?Hell yes, please.)We lived similar experiences in a lot of ways.Shes making me think that mid life is the perfect time to give all my beloved favorite books growing up a re-read&re-watch all my fave movies again, too.

For as much as I have been enjoying listening (&reading) Dune, I realized I have only read a couple LGBTQ+ novels this Pride season. I think this had been listed as a previous mini challenge qualifier for it was on my “to be read” list on Libby, but alas, it doesn’t count for this year.

My heart breaks for her and her brother, Zach, to have to go through his cancer diagnosis
