Warburton hasn't used the words narcissist, sadist, or humorous to describe Fowles, so far. Curious. And I wonder why so many british writers choose hovels to live in when (1) their spouse (always female) will have to do the majority of compromising and cleaning up and (2) they have enough money to choose better places. Thinking of Orwell and, now, Fowles.

Actual text is 461 pages, so I'm nearing completion. Have enjoyed living in this, sharing a novelist's life and work.

The total page count is misleading. The text (I'm reading an advance proof) is only 461 pages. Must be notes and index that fill out the book to 528; I have the notes but not the index, and who "reads" an index anyway?

Not exactly zipping through this bio, though I love it; too many other things going on…

I am also intrigued that his diaries and other materials are archived here in Texas at The University of Texas at Austin. It means that I could easily take a trip down to see them, if I ever wanted to look at them.

What stood out in the intro was that the author of this bio had access to everything - Fowles' family and friends, co-workers, his private journals and letters, and even Fowles himself. With all of this, I am expecting a very authoratative work.

Well, I am reading a bio of John Fowles because I am still fascinated with THE MAGUS... which opened up some doors of awareness, and just finished up THE COLLECTOR, which was an impressive pychological creep fest, with insights on art, music, class. Today, when I found the bio, I knew I had to find out more about this guy. I've completed the intro by the author this afternoon.
