Status Updates From River's Song: Spring Flings...

He took a deep breath. How did a guy like him get his soul back?
He felt the answer was in loving her. His fingers ran over the frets. The magic of the moment caught him up into a wonderland of birds and bees and the soft evening glow weaving through pink fairy trees in a crochet of color. Liv lowered her camera to look at him with her own eyes. “Play that song again.”

“You poor thing," Momma cried. "You fall in a creek?”
“I’m thinking more like a River!” Her sister chimed in. Liv swung around, seeing her sister had come over to see the gossip for herself. “Get into some dry clothes and get right back here," her sister said with a warm smile. "I want to hear everything about that shocking man.”

“River! Is this how you treat the girl who tried to rescue you?”
“Is that what you call it?” he asked. That sassy little minx. His hands tightened on her. His wildly exploding heart couldn’t keep back from her anymore. He moved his lips a fraction to find hers, kissing her exactly how he’d wanted since the moment he’d met her.

He had every arsenal to win her over, from his deep voice, to those strong, muscular fingers gliding gently over that guitar. He subconsciously used every trick he had on her. The whole world would fall in love with him through her camera lens. She just had to make sure she didn’t too.

“River! River Mackenzie.” One of the other women called out to him. He’d played hooky from them for far too long. “This gazebo is not going to paint itself.”
“That’s your cue, Casanova,” she whispered. “You should probably get back to your friends.”
He wasn’t going anywhere.

Wow! Her eyes were almost black. “What’s your name?”
“Love,” she whispered.
Wait, did he hear that right. He broke into a grin. “Did you just say your name is love?”
“No.” She burst out laughing, sounding as nervous as he felt. “I’m Liv. Short for Olivia, so no, definitely not Love.”

Liv got a shot of the strong tendons on River Mackenzie’s wrists as he held the paintbrush. The crowd split and he straightened his broad shoulders like he was tired, maybe a bit world weary. In all the pictures she’d found of him online, none felt as candid as what she took now.

Ninety days in rehab. Ninety days to detox. Ninety days to take a good hard look at himself and figure out why. He’d wanted a good time, to laugh, to feel good… so why couldn’t he do that without doing what everyone else was doing? Now he just felt lost.

“Momma!” Liv had to laugh at that. “I’m not the Pumpkin Princess anymore.”
“The Harvest Queen,” Momma haughtily corrected. “And I don’t see why that bad boy shouldn’t fall in love with my baby? And I’m telling you now that I don’t approve.”

This was far from the life he’d envisioned for himself—his songs had idealized a simple country life—the sweet wife, kids, dogs, maybe that cute little house with a white picket fence. His stomach tightened with despair. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he’d crash his Ferrari through that picket fence instead.
