I really like the premise. Martyr like MFC—which gets a little much. The word “orphanage” is used WAY too much. I don’t think I ever heard it this much before within my entire life combined. Narrator was dragging a bit. Kind of reminded me of a news broadcaster. Had to speed up to 1.5 just to make it a little, ore peppy

The writing is so weird for me lol. I’m getting all itchy… nah-uh. Too much explanation too fast and too sudden. Feeling like a tv series episode where the narrator is telling the whole story before anything actually happens. Don’t tell me, show me. Huff… maybe another time. The story is not bad, mind you. So I’ll definitely come back to finish. Just… not today.

She blinked rapidly at the assault on her senses as her eyes struggled to adjust. Her gaze landed on her Triad, all three kneeling around her, reaching for her. She sucked in a breath as she met their blue, green, and gold gazes, looking at them in color for the very first time.
She could see.

Apparently eating all of the bindings it could, the magic settled at her center again.
“Claire,” Desmond said softly.
She lifted her gaze, noting a glow fading around her like her magic had thrown up a protection dome without her telling it to.

Claire let out a breath of relief that quickly caught as she realized the new problem. Her magic retreated from the daggers with a ferocity as it rushed back towards the dome of bindings over her center. It hit the dome with a vengeance, forcing Claire to her knees under the pressure as the magic ate at the bindings until the dome looked like a patchwork quilt.

If her magic exploded like that it would hurt her Triad again.

She didn’t recognize it but instinct told her this was Elven script. What was happening?
The Fae dagger at her hip heated unbearable and with a gasp she quickly grabbed it with her other hand. Magic shot out of her center through her hands into the daggers and they glowed. Claire panicked and called her magic back quickly, not wanting the same explosion to happen as the first time she grabbed the Fae dagger.

It seemed as if the tent held its collective breath, all four pairs of eyes on her. She dropped her hand and grabbed the pommel of the dagger.
Unlike the heat of the Fae dagger, this dagger cooled drastically under her touch, the icy touch of it freezing her palm around the grip. The shadows lightened drastically until Claire could make out the script inlaid on the dagger’s blade.

“What?” The growl exploded out of Malcolm. “That’s impossible.”
“It’s not,” the Headmaster held out a piece of paper, “read it for yourself. Claire has been chosen as a Champion of the Realm and the neutral Academy has pledged itself to her aid.”

“How do you know that?” Everett asked.
“Because in this missive, the Academy told me why.” Headmaster Dorian said, “It has named you, Claire, as a Champion.”
“A Champion of the Academy?” Desmond asked, the familiarity in his tone told Claire this wasn’t a new concept.
“No.” The Headmaster paused. “A Champion of the Realm.”

Claire struggled to open her eyes, confused as to when she had closed them, and gasped. Her world was no longer filled with shadows. Instead, bright shades assaulted her eyes as she took in the room, clearly. So clearly. She closed her eyes as the images assaulted her brain, unused to the onslaught on her senses.

The second she wrapped her fingers around the hilt of the dagger, heat emanated from the connection, shooting down her arm and into her center where it hit the dome surrounding her magic. Her magic reacted to the intrusion by splintering out of the dome and sending a shockwave through her body. It exploded out of her, sending the men flying back from her and the table sliding from the force of it.

“But one can’t have multiple mates,” Claire knew she sounded like a broken record but that’s all her brain was focusing on.
“While it’s not common in shifters and witches, it does happen. It was more common when the Fae and Elves attended the Academy as both cultures had multiple matings.” Desmond was a fountain of knowledge as he tried to give her brain something else to focus on.

“Claire,” Desmond began, “we owe you a massive apology.”
“Oh, no I should be…” Claire was cut off by Desmond’s hand covering hers.
“Us first, and if you still feel the need to apologize, even though none of us think you need to, we will let you.”

Malcolm was still standing looking down at her. “Sit down, Malcolm.” Desmond said, finishing the spell and coming to settle on Claire’s left, opposite of Everett, “You’ll scare Claire, standing there like a growly warden.”
Malcolm dropped into a seated position so fast Claire jumped a bit. She offered him a small smile before pulling her hand out of Everett’s and folding them in her lap.

Holly tugged Claire to a stop and stepped closer, “I’m thrilled for you but as your friend I have to warn you to keep that ability on the downlow.”
“Why?”
“Because what Professor Helene forgot to mention is that is not a common ability for a witch even in our most powerful witches.”
“Then why is there a book on it?”
“Because it was a common ability in the Fae.”
Awww why is it always fae
