This is beautifully written. It’s also dark. Not dark in a what-a-gruesome-serial-killer-this-author-imagined way but a darkness that comes from memories of evil that people want to look away from but which cannot be erased or forgiven. Evil that taints everyone touched by it. This is fiction refusing to look away from reality.
