Powered through quicker than I expected. It's not that it was enthralling or anything... I kind of just wanted to get it over with. But it wasn't bad, either. I dunno... the stuff about Steve learning that magic is more than the preconceived notions of this world would have one believe is intriguing, but it only barely gets teased at. And it probably won't be that impressive once all is said and done anyways.

The two main antagonists they set up for this book have already been encountered and completely dealt with, barely over halfway through. What the hell is the rest of this book going to be??
Honestly, the fights were pretty cool. But I was thinking for most of the first half of this book that I might not continue with this series. It (was) getting dull. Now, I don't know. Depends how the rest of this book is filled...

So the bad guy wants his dryad back and Steve's cow, but Steve refuses. So in order to get what they want, the bad guy sneak onto the farm and... kidnap Marietta? What? Why not just sneak in and take the unguarded dryad back?? I know this is leading to Steve rescuing Marietta and she'll then start loving him, but come on. Use basic logic. If the thing they want is completely open, they would do that instead!

'I'm the one who chose to home you.' What? Home isn't a verb like that. You mean house.
This is still silly and dumb for many reasons, but I will say the plot set up here is decent, considering the pieces at play. It is relatively compelling, for what it is. But I imagine the conclusion will be rushed and ridiculous.

The initial encounter with Dakota was very childish. A character saying frick every 3 words is not cool or appealing to anyone older than 12. Also, Dakota in general just seems like an unironic edgelord. I thought for a moment that it was going to be yet another overpowered male cat side character (b/c it was ambiguous at first), but no, she's at least going to be a love interest (I assume).

Overcoming this demi-beast racism is going to be a large part of this series, but it's dumb. Steve could easily overcome at least the immediate problems if he just claimed that he has taken over the farm. He's human, and they'd probably believe him without issue. His current attitude is like going to Jim Crow era South and just expecting racism to stop existing, without actually doing anything about it.

I forgot how cringe the writing could be in this. The townsfolk all being wildly racist is so horribly handled. I still like the characters, though. Instantly reconnected with them.
