“When someone is trying to make you small, it is to busy themselves. Because if they aren’t shrinking you, they will have to contend with themselves. They have work to do, but it is easier to make assignments for others than do the labor yourself. You have done this to others, what is now being done to you. It always feels righteous.”

“The labor I put into my work is clearing everything out of the way until I can listen. The work I do is to look at the moon, or a body of water, or some creature other than human, and wait until I understand something.“

Stopped reading at page 24 but the second story is good. Similar writing style, story also in Detroit and about water but in a different way. Not sure if it's in the same "world" because as I've read so far, water has to be rationed and people are being punished for "political incompetence". Interesting

The poems are nice but the short stories so far (I only read the river) are REALLY good. A nice blend of Ishmael Reed and Nadie Smith in the way the story is written. Fresh use of language honestly
