OK! So he's promised to see to her safety. She meets a very young cousin who is living with a woman he knows to be a courtesan, and decides to stay with her, not seeing the obvious problem. Not to mention, people are looking to kill the guy. It makes NO sense that she would go along with this, let alone her guardians!

OK, this is very hard to swallow. This guy comes in, threatens the heroine with a knife, and before the evening is out she's contemplating traveling with him, posing as his wife, and trusting him to get her where she wants to go. Especially in an era when just being alone with the man would destroy her reputation and create a scandal that would hurt her family!
