Status Updates From Katak Hendak Jadi Lembu

Suria is such a self-destructive character. And a narcissist. He doesn't think about his kids or his wife or his family or his debts or anything. He just wants to show off, have fun, be in power and demand respect from others when there's is nothing to respect about him. How did he even get this far in life?

My 3rd Balai Pustaka novel of the year! Am enjoying this one too. All of them have been critical of dominant and stupid men in traditional society. Still amazed that male authors in Indonesia already wrote about this topic in 1920s and 1930s. However, Indonesia doesn't have a strong reading culture, so I think most of the general public never got the memo. But they already wrote about it and I'm glad about that.

Another literary work from the 30s. The language is old, some words I can't even find in the dictionary. But the plot is interesting! Similar to Azab dan Sengsara, we find yet another unhappy marriage between a poor woman and spoiled man. Was that a popular subject in the 30s? Suria is a loser who just wants to show off power and get respect. I don't like how he behaved at Haji Junaedis' home. What is he going to do?

Bingung antara mau ngasih bintang tinggi karena ikut kebawa sebel sama Suria, atau bintang rendah karena terlalu sebel sama Suria. My life is complicated.
