I think, but he wants to reach heaven as he strayed off god’s path onto sin, and to redeem himself he must face some representations of sin being portrayed as beasts trying to hunt him down, he is being guided by “shades” of people he once knew, in the first canto he’s saved by his first mentor when being hunted by She-wolf

finally got my ass up and crawled out of inferno!!! n what a final canto. seriously provided the most interesting depiction of lucifer i’ve ever read — a brutish, giant demon with three faces, a pair of bat wings underneath each of his chins, with him chewing on the mangled bodies of judas, brutus and cassius for eternity.
