This is a Sherlockian type of story, you've got the brilliant (though not quite eccentric) private detective and his equally smart, but more formal sidekick solving crimes. It's doing nothing to really elevate the trope and quite frankly, with the current state of the US, I am finding the whole story centered around 'us vs them' mob mentality exhausting.
