Recently, I've come up with a way to read the book and find it fascinating. What if the narrator isn't a woman who remembers her childhood stories? What if the past isn't so far? Perhaps, we're reading the instant memoir of an overthinker. Hypothesis still in progress...

I'm not particularly drawn to Piedad Bonet's writing. However, lately I've been thinking about the romantic character. I don't believe this false autobiography is particularly romantic, because maybe the romanticism is focused on the inner thoughts of the protagonist; meanwhile, this character is constantly trying to figure out the outer perspective on herself, kindly avoiding how it might affect her.
