Reading about the South Asian experience, chapter titled ‘Obstacles This Way, Blockades That Way’.
I feel sadness at the shared experience they had on Angel Island and in America. I feel pride for their resilience and fortitude in spite of these hardships

Chapter 3 touches the Japanese experience at the island. I find it interesting how similar the Chinese experience differed so widely from the Japanese… mainly due to Japan winning the Sino-Russian war and gaining political cache with Western powers

Full disclosure, reading this book as a means to piecing together my family’s history. My mom came through Angel Island in 1961.
There were snippets as kids where we heard my mom’s family having 2 family names.
