Status Updates From Out of Place: A Memoir

Chapter IX (9) is heartbreaking. I feel like I’m friends with Edward at this point and now to circle back to his chronic leukemia reality while writing the memoir aches deep in my chest as I scan each paragraph

Being myself meant not only never being quite right, but also never feeling at ease, always expecting to be interrupted or corrected, to have my privacy invaded and my unsure person set upon. Permanently out of place, the extreme and rigid regime of discipline and extracurricular education that my father would create and in which I became imprisoned from the age of nine left me no respite or sens of myself...

Even Edward had a bully grew up to be gay and then eventually we’re coming a movie star! That is so wild

[…] I recall meeting de Zogheibs and de Chedids there, recipients of papal titles, which about a decade later, during the high Nasser years, struck me as grotesquely inappropriate[…] they spoke the heavily accented French of the Levant with its rolled r's” Pgs. 196-197

This segment on Victoria College of Cairo seems meant to remind the reader of how terrible going to an authoritarian school is as a pubescent teenager.

So, Edward, you found your freedom through tennis in Dhour, Lebanon after being a Princeton Graduate? I know how freeing it can feel to be on a tennis court. Very relatable.
