Bring me a drink.
I need to think a little.
Paper. Pen.
And I could use the stink
of a good cigar–even
though the sun’s out.
The grackles in the trees.
The grackles inside my heart.
Broken feathers and stiff wings.
I could jump.
But I don’t.
You could kill me.
But you won’t.
The grackles
calling to each other.
The long hours.
The long hours.
The long hours.

I enjoy her use of metaphors and comparisons. I think her being from San Antonio and speaking from a perspective so close to myself makes it feel more personal. Granted I’m not able to relate to a lot of what I’ve read, I think I can find a context in which my understanding can be real.

Something of you still taut
still tugs still pulls,
a rope that trembled
hummed between us.
Hummed, love, didn't it.
Love, how it hummed.
