Herod imprisons John the Baptist because John said unto him ‘It is not lawful for thee to have her’ referring to Herodias, Herod’s brother’s wife. Herod does not execute him though because he fears the multitudes who regard him a prophet. But on Herod’s birthday, Herodias’ daughter dances for him and he promises to grant her whatever she wants.
