Maybe putting this one on hold.the initial novella and the second volume "Mathematics of Magic" both went well, but the way the "Castle of Iron" begins is giving me a hard time starting.

okay. novella #2 down. i enjoyed this one a little more from the get-go just bc i've never read the faerie queene so i had no bias & thus the irreverence was less offensive to me. there were some great zingers in this one. i find myself in a strange place with this book enjoying it while i am actively reading it but not feeling particularly compelled to pick it back up & continue reading when i've paused.

another sentence that made me cackle out loud: "The goblins were learning anti-aircraft fire."

you ever try to summon a unicorn but accidentally summon a rhinoceros & then ride it screaming into a druid camp to save your friends & cohorts from being sacrificed to the gods

"the lion did not spring. instead it grimaced. the fanged mouth became a beak, wings sprouted from its shoulders, and it was a griffin. that, shea realized, was not kosher." sometimes this book is entertaining if dry & then sometimes we get lines like this

okay! once i rly let myself settle into this it was actually quite fun. i'll be thinking of our protag trapped in a múspellheim dungeon with heimdall racing cockroaches for entertainment for a while. a little sad we didn't actually see the battle of ragnarök but /shrug i can understand why we would cut it off before that lol.

not my favorite thing i've read so far this year but not unenjoyable. personally i think this kind of irreverent tongue-in-cheek portrayal of my beloved norse gods & mythology is a little distasteful for me. that being said i think the overall premise is silly & fun so fingers crossed
