Despite the differences of detail and in imaginative power, the resemblance between Iranian legend and Christian prophecy is surely too close to be mere coincidence. It seems incontestable that the main source of Christian apocalyptic faith was fed by age-old Zoroastrian lore.

…Jesus thought of himself as the Messiah of the poor; and that he expected Roman rule in Palestine to be overthrown in the very near future, not indeed by an armed rising but by the direct intervention of God, and to be replaced by a regime in which he would rule as god's vice-regent. So the mocking notice that the Romans nailed to the cross seems to have been more appropriate than is usually thought.

The war with the Romans tried their souls through and through by every variety of test. Racked and twisted, burned and broken, and made to pass through every instrument of torture in order to induce them to blaspheme their lawgiver or to eat some forbidden thing, they refused to yield to either demand, nor ever once did they cringe to their persecutors or shed a tear.

When…people experienced…overwhelming military defeats and…political subjugation, the obvious conclusion was drawn: its patron deity was recognised as weaker than the patron deity of the conqueror. And once discredited, a god…was soon neglected and forgotten. Nothing of the kind happened to Yahweh. On the contrary: the very magnitude of the disasters was offered as conclusive evidence…of Yahweh's justice and…power.
