I feel like I need to quote this entire section about the Civil War. It’s obvious, really, when you think about it—but we don’t usually present the motivations of those in the union as fighting the slave owners because they “drove down labor costs through mass enslavement.” It wasn’t about the wellbeing and rights of slaves; it was about poverty existing because of the slavers.

I mean, Hasan Piker was right. The American military exists to protect the capital owners and their interests, not the American people.

As the oligarchs would say: It’s a nice democracy you have there. Would be a shame if something happened to it.

There was something to ponder there, about loving unrequited, to the ends of the galaxy, and without them ever knowing.

…really, he didn’t have to sound so full of disbelief. People had knowingly risked their lives for less, surely.

Despite this premise being very much my guilty pleasure weakness, this book is WAY too horny for me. 🫣🥴🤢

What’s the word you use to describe when dialogue and internal character thoughts are written in an “I clearly haven’t been able to capture how people actually speak” way?

Omfg. Nooooooo! Chapter four may have just ruined this book for me. I just. Ugh. That is WAY too early.

“Now that I’d learned more about Caleb, the idea of a farm seemed like amateur hour for dreaming big. And anyways, the girls back home talked about farms only because it was distasteful for them to say what they really wanted: to be like Caleb. Wealthy.”

Being inside this woman’s head is genuinely nauseating.

“But Clementine? Practically a woman now. She couldn’t be trusted.”

Omg.

“Little idiots. They were desperate to eat me. They had no idea I was the one who was keeping them alive.”

What a way for her to describe her children.

“Sometimes it actually made me sick how perfect my life was and how good I was at living it.”

Love the world building so far.

I’m still upset about Joey and Rachel. They would have genuinely been an amazing and healthy direction for the show to take and it was ended so prematurely. Instead, she ends up with toxic asshole in the last episode which literally anyone with any relationship know how should fully understand would never last since Ross showed over and over again that he was never capable of maturing in this area. 😤

Woooww. Missed opportunity, my friend! Should’ve compared her to Evelyn from The Mummy! Books at dig sites, ya know?
