Fully on board now. One thing Danielewski really excels at, both here and in HOL, is atmosphere. The prose is alive, and my qualms with the narrative tone have more or less vanished. One thousand pages to go!

Not thoroughly convinced by the rootin’ tootin’ narration, but I’m in the mood for both a long book and a western, so I’m going to give Danielewski a fair shot.

Parts One and Two were completely independent (and not very good), which makes me think this “novel” is just a couple short stories left over from a creative writing MFA that got thrown together to form a book 😅

Actually started reading the reviews of a random-account friend who I accepted because they read similar books to me, and I realized they’re all AI-generated 🫩 Bot almost got me! So annoying.

God help us, this begins as another borderline YA book, like The Wolves of Eternity. I keep giving Knausgaard the benefit of the doubt because I loved My Struggle so much, but this is such mediocre and robotic writing. The Knausgaardian angsty male POV is a tired trope at this point.
