Opening has been a little weak. Didn't expect it to be this level of pop history

Incredibly challenging to make it through her narration.

First half much stronger than the latter half of the book. The 'Hard Right" substructural claims are amazingly thin. Misses the entire tech and scientific elements of New Right intellectual streams. The work also whiffs on covering ideas from Girard and Burnham.

Field is extremely sloppy about empirical claims despite relying on "empirical historical context" as a blanket refutation on the ideas of the "New Right"....

The critique of Mansfield-Anton's ideas as misogynistic is disappointing. It rests on the tired conflation of criticizing feminism as criticizing women. Field's argument is premised on the same identitarian representationalism of 'wokeness'...

Heavy early focus on Straussianism.

Struggling some with this one. The dialogue feels kitschy and anachronistic.

Fuller characters lacks some verisimilitude. Appears mostly a creation of Laughlin though gets his own limited POV.

It is interesting that the book takes it time finally getting around to introducing the full cast of characters. Dickon, Mr. Craven, and Colin don't appear until the midpoint.

I had this booked in Libby for some unknown reason (some rec I can't remember). Didn't realize this would be a gay romance of sorts. Interestingly, it doubles as a historical/political novel of the second Red Scare.
