lost my Jane Austen spark until I didn’t hear English for 24+ hours and couldn’t stop craving it & now, suddenly, I’m on the edge of my seat about a fictional love triangle from 200+ years ago. you’re outdoing yourself again, Jane

my first book in Korean! so really all that means is that it takes 30 minutes to read a paragraph and I now know how to say primeval forest in Korean (원시림). progress!

Things that blew my mind today: John Stuart Mill arguing against the secret ballot (because the purpose of voting, in his estimation is to promote the common interest, not the “aggregation of private interests”) 🤯

I’m moving through this book at a glacial pace & almost abandoned it in the first chapter, but I now love how it illuminates everyday objects to show how choice-making became what it is today. Commonplace books as a window into broadening conceptual choices in the 19th century? Sure! Dance cards to understand how people regulated sexual choice when we first gained it? Awesome.
