I’m moving through this book at a glacial pace & almost abandoned it in the first chapter, but I now love how it illuminates everyday objects to show how choice-making became what it is today. Commonplace books as a window into broadening conceptual choices in the 19th century? Sure! Dance cards to understand how people regulated sexual choice when we first gained it? Awesome.

Things that blew my mind today: John Stuart Mill arguing against the secret ballot (because the purpose of voting, in his estimation is to promote the common interest, not the “aggregation of private interests”) 🤯
