Kris is 50% done with Among Ghosts

Really, really liking it! It’s definitely darker and has more peril than the cozy stuff I’ve been reading lately, but Hartman does such a good job with the characters and pacing that it never gets overwhelming. There’s definitely some creepy bits for sure.

Sigh. This is a fantasy. Set in a world that is most definitely NOT 20th century America. And yet so far I’ve encountered characters saying “yada yada yada” and drinking Pinot Grigio wine. Nothing yanks me out of a fantasy faster than stuff like that! It’s infuriating!! Aarrgghhh!!

About halfway through. It’s quite harrowing so far. I mean, I figured he’d talk about his gender struggles, but I had no idea about all the other things: sexual assault (victimized multiple times), eating disorder, near assault multiple times for his sexuality, family struggles. My God, it’s lucky he survived to even be able to transition!

Kris is on page 109 of 505 of Foundryside (The Founders Trilogy, #1)

Pretty good, but a few too many references to modern/this world things (references to being "caffeinated", people saying "that's, like, something else" or "Oh my God!") - it tends to jar me out of the world the author created (which is definitely not Earth and definitely not modern). I've seen worse, but I didn't expect it from an author that is so lauded. The story is still good, though. So I'm still reading!

Good, but it's not quite the escapist fiction I'd hoped for. The rise of fascism in Europe between the World Wars is playing a significant role. Hitting too close to home, with what is happening in the US and elsewhere. :(
