“ How could a moral organization find itself lumped in with Hollywood sex predators and the former president of the United States—the sort of people who run around wallpapering over crimes with cash? The answer is that large corporations are neither moral nor immoral. Once they reach a certain size, they are amoral. They exist only to protect and propagate themselves.”

It really is incredible just how many tropes/motifs/elements of science fiction and horror she managed to kick off with one book

this is perfectly paced so far; on the surface it feels meandering and quiet, but in reality the story is moving forward with every page

I undertook a project to read my own books for the first time since publishing them, mainly to make notes on themes and structural elements.

one question I’ve always had is whether Bertha Mason was not white/not fully white but upon this reread my conclusion is that she couldn’t have been mixed race/not white. Too much is said of her privilege and relative status that I don’t think she would have had if she weren’t white?

if Jane had any other reaction than what she has to Rochester’s secret, this book would have been unbearable.

Genuinely the analysis is so brilliant. What I appreciate is how often he is willing to de-center western culture, and remind the readers of the other eastern cultures which may, at times, have made scientific discoveries centuries prior
