This is weighed down by the fact that the characters feel extraordinarily young

this is perfectly paced so far; on the surface it feels meandering and quiet, but in reality the story is moving forward with every page

I undertook a project to read my own books for the first time since publishing them, mainly to make notes on themes and structural elements.

This is much like being on a date with a tiresome man who needs you to know that, despite his father being a republican, he is in fact a liberal and this is his great gift to you (aside from his intellect which he shall shortly bestow upon you)

one question I’ve always had is whether Bertha Mason was not white/not fully white but upon this reread my conclusion is that she couldn’t have been mixed race/not white. Too much is said of her privilege and relative status that I don’t think she would have had if she weren’t white?

if Jane had any other reaction than what she has to Rochester’s secret, this book would have been unbearable.

Genuinely the analysis is so brilliant. What I appreciate is how often he is willing to de-center western culture, and remind the readers of the other eastern cultures which may, at times, have made scientific discoveries centuries prior
