This is really grim. Was not prepared at all for how dark this would be, especially since the characters are kids .11 and 12. Are they supposed to just live like this?

This seems to be different from manacled. There is something about Soren (Ron) that Helena has suppressed, And I assume it’s eye important if it makes her have this kind of reaction. It’s like her mind auto deleted her recent memory after she tried to remember him too hard

Of course, perhaps she welcomed her father’s tendency to treat her like a son bcs in her heart she felt she was a boy? So being close with her volatile father was preferable to her mother and sister.
I do feel for her but I also find the way she treats Lucy insufferable

I’m really impressed that the author managed to trick me for this long. I was certain that Sam was a boy. I went back to check and there was never a mention of Sam’s gender, I just assumed. The name and the mannerisms were enough to convince me without any real evidence. This adds a whole new layer to the story. Sam has the weight of her father’s expectations on her to be how he wanted even after he’s dead

So that’s the same at least. Ginny/ Lila’s secret

Its difficult to imagine a time and place that is so uncaring that children are turned away like this. Clearly they don’t expect to recive help with the body of their dead father. Lucy is only trying to take out a loan. I feel for her a lot already, her attempts to stay above water trapped between an abusive father and a little brother who takes more and more after him each day. Sam shot at a man?

This book has its moments But Im not sure that I’ll reach for book 2. I like it well enough But it was missing something. Certain characters felt a bit flat. Like zixin and Chunlei for example and at times there were big narrative shifts in the story that just happend over one or two pages. Like Yining hating Zixin or Yining and Dian turning out to be sisters. And Jin’s pov chapter was wasted potential imo

Well this was a nice plot twist

Earlier Athena had a memory from school of her Luc and another person she couldn’t remember. I think I was right to assume that person was Kaine, and that they probably did interact some at school but she has erased those memories too.
That’s definitely a plus in this version, manacled couldn’t really make use of their memories from school but here these two could have a completely different dynamic

Heh finally some banter. He’s definitely having fun testing her memory

2. It was basically just “wow this is really painful” and she passes out and relives a memory of Luc who I don’t care about. Helena (and Hermione in Manacled) is basically a blank slate. Without the SA which doesn’t need explanation for the reader to become emotional I think the author is struggling to make these scenes actually angsty. Come on, give me something to actually angst over! (That isn’t SA)

1.Helena is sterile, so this book is really not going there. That’s a relief.
What I Will say though is I feel like the book so far lacks emotion. I feel kinda disconnected from Helena as a character and the conflict between her and Kaine. She’s a prisoner and Kaine is mean and he performs the resonance on her but the first (so far only) resonance scene was kinda flat…

2. I’ve been bracing for reliving those awful scenes again and now that it was just mind torture it feels kinda anticlimactic. That sounds awful I know. I am glad they changed that aspect but I feel they should’ve changed the storybeats and lines too bcs it was extremely recognizable as that scene from manacled, only replacing SA with mind torture. And I wonder what the potion he took was for if not that…

1. Ok we just passed the first session scene and it was thankfully way less traumatic than in manacled. Just painful mind magic stuff. I don’t really understand Transference, he is triumf to push his soul onside her mind to unlock her memories?
Anyways the ”get out” and her Tyringe to koll herdefolk after didn’t have the same emotional damage as in Manacled…

Omg its the introduction scene!
The high Reeve’s name is Kaine Ferron, was in her year at the Alchemical institute undergraduate study program. Don’t know yet how much interaction they had at school but probably not that much. I always wonder at what he must’ve been thinking when Helena shows up in his life again like this. I want a POV

Does Helena know these people or not? Bcs they’re introduced like she doesn’t. But if she doesn’t know Shiseo (Snape) how can she call him a traitor immediately? And Mandle (Umbridge) knows & hated Helen for benig a vivimancer allied with the Eternal flame But Helena hasn’t seen her before? Maybe those two were never her teachers here but it’s confusing bcs I’m reading and comparing with Manacled

… In manacled she didn’t need to explain who Harry or Ginny or Parvati was bcs we knew already and it made certain scenes carry that much more significance.
I know Luc is supposed to be Harry and Grace is supposed to be Hannah Abott, but THIS IS NOT MANACLED you have to actually do the work to build them up and give backstory for me to care. I want to care. But this is only the first 20 pages so I have hope

…This is a great opportunity for Helena to remember some moment between the two to make the reader emotionally invest in the characters story but also to understand the significance of certain interactions.
I can tell which characters these names correspond to in Manacled, but this is supposed to be a different book that can stand on its own. Manacled had seven books worth of story to build upon (continued 2…kr

I’m not putting the book down, just saying that I think senlinyu should’ve done more to explain these introduced characters to the reader and what their relation to Helena is. Like Grace. Helena knows Grace, she was an “orderly in the hospital”. That is the only info we get about their relation. First of all, what does that mean, what hospital? And were they friends? No way his description of thorn valley is ”we have lakes and wildflowers”. Brother there has to be more than that😭

Sure this mission is plot important but let’s be real, Yining has zero qualifications to be on this mission. And why on earth would they wait like two weeks after that girl was kidnapped to have a competition to see who would be chosen to rescue her? It makes no sense

The Prince is starting to show his true, less pleasant colors. I just wished he and the other characters were a bit more fleshed out, I feel slightly disconnected from the story

Fick den idag på julafton, börja läsa den ikväll när vi satte oss o kolla på film. Hade typ 20 sidor kvar när filmen va slut. Nu utläst. Bra avslut för manga serien tyckte jag. Rainbow uttryckte det bra i sin authors note: Fangirl är comforting, o den är så mysig att läsa, det var kul att återvända till den i manga format efter så lång tid, minns när jag läste boken i högstadiet.

I like the Carp but I’m skeptical about this ring stuff. I feel like this leads to Yining having either divine or royal heritage (like the pearl ocean?) and it’s like of course. But didn’t the author literally write a different series about an mc with the same thing? But I’ll hold my judgement for a while longer

Naw, just when Tamura Reiko stopped seeing humanity as the enemy she gets killed. She began to care for her baby too, and apparently trusted shinichi enough to give it to him to keep safe

Yes I hope she’s beginning to develop some kind of motherly instinct
