Back on the Bible in a Year grind in 2025, but this time with Cara! Updating for the first 40 days of consistent listening (already read in previous years). Starting back strong after a break leading up to Lent, so more updates to come.

This is wild. Every chapter makes some new connection I never saw coming - especially the most recent encounter with the American journalist… honestly a mind-blowing way to tell this story! Can’t wait to see how it wraps up!

Definitely getting better! A compelling story told from an interesting point of view - seems like something’s about to happen.

Not bad so far, but definitely a YA book - I’ve been told it gets really great later, so I’ll trust Kristin on this one ;)

As the book closes out another era in time, the appearance of the Thon makes for some intriguing parallels to leading Renaissance thinkers - all too willing to sacrifice the guiding faith of generations past in favor of a cold and calculating reason. Despite the Abbot’s warning to set limits at the bounds of science before the disastrous pattern of the past repeats itself, the scientist pridefully rejects him.

This book is incredible! Such an engaging story that really makes you think about the way history repeats itself… and the role of the Church in the inevitable scientific and philosophical progress of humanity. The moral of these pages: it is the role of the Church to preserve and share knowledge, not restrict it, but it is *necessary* that she convert the hearts of the recipients to the truth, to prevent disaster.

Loving this so far! Such a refreshingly realistic take on post-apocalyptic society - amazing to see the Church repeating the same patterns that took place after the Fall of Rome… always there to preserve what would have otherwise been lost and provide a refuge for those seeking the truth!

This story just keeps going further off the deep end… really shows how one seemingly-small sin can lead to a lifetime of consequences. Every time you give in to sin, the easier it gets to commit a bigger one next time. Kristin is finding this out the hard way, and it’s so sad to see the breakdown in family dynamics, even with her parents Lavrans and Ragnfrid.

Everything sped up, then slowed way down… I find this book hard to get into, with all the pacing changes. But pretty much the reaction I expected from Lavrans - he’s too good a man to allow Kristin to fall victim to such sin.

Story just got a lot more interesting… a bit ironic that a year in a cloister leads to an illicit romance, but I’m honestly not surprised at this point. Still not the fastest read, but getting better!

Pretty slow up to this point, and I’m not a huge fan of the writing style. Love the descriptions of the Norwegian wilderness and Catholic Christian life in the medieval times though! I feel like this story is about to get a lot more intense.

Stunning story so far! The end of Part I takes a very unexpected turn, after chapters on chapters of bitterness and hatred. The idea that God could work on the heart of a man like Louis is hard to fathom - but I feel like that’s what’s happening. Can’t wait to see where Part II takes this new theme!

The first installment of Dr. Zalar’s Catholic Themes in Literature course. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, but I’ve been surprised by the engaging writing style, and have found it hard to put down, even though it covers a bit of a difficult topic. Looking forward to seeing where this goes! (and more exciting class discussions on it ;)

I’ve decided to re-embark on the Bible in a Year journey for 2024. I plan to update Goodreads every few weeks with a percentage of the total Bible read (based on 52 weeks in a year… or 30 pages/week) So far, so good… re-doing the first 40 days that I completed back in 2021. Genesis is such an exciting story - beautiful to see the way God continues to work through broken people to bring goodness and hope!

Really awesome read! I didn’t make it this far the first time I read it… and I’ve been really impressed with Trent’s sample conversations for answering the “hard cases” (categorizing people by the way they argue the abortion issue is so helpful, and will definitely change the way I approach conversations on campus)

Continuing to use this every once in a while for meditation in personal prayer - not as much recently, so it may take a while to finish.

Honestly this book is kinda dragging along… been almost a year since I started it. Still an intriguing story, but too much buildup. The recent elimination of some major characters has me questioning where Herbert is going with this series. We’ll have to see how it ends!
