It was while reading chapter seven that I went online to buy the audiobook, because I only listen to books I’ve already read, and I need to hear the Prince speak ❤️🔥

This book is hitting me in all the feels. There’s nothing like a good sequel, building on what came before, rewarding our attention and investment.

Loving the book—but my experience as a narrator means I cringe at the thought of delivering all these lines that repeat the full brand and model of showers, toilet seats, and mattresses.

When my friend Emma sent me this book, I assumed it was because of the UK setting. Now, I know it’s really because of the adorable cat.

I just wanted to state for the record this new cover art is a crime. I have a beautiful older paperback version, thanks to my dear friend, Sarah.

I’m loving this first-since-college reread so much, particularly just how funny it is! I burst out laughing and had trouble explaining why to my kid, as it’s both highly contextual and linguistically complex ❤️🔥
“This indiscriminate liquidation of cops must stop.”
Contextually, this is hilarious 😂

“There was this sort of cultural explosion, and we’re still feeling the aftershocks; we’ll go on feeling them forever. That’s what the Benandanti are for: to make sure we keep on hearing the echo of a bomb that went off seven thousand years ago.”
The perfect foe to a feminist atheist like me.

Me reading Waking the Moon at 17: Sigh, I would fall instantly in love with Oliver
At 47: Yeah, I actually hate to admit it but I’d be chasing Oliver for a scrap of attention 😭 dammit

Currently annoyed by how likable these rich guys are, which is appropriate as it’s basically what Jade is feeling too.

“You don’t remake The Exorcist, you don’t sequel Rosemary’s Baby, and you don’t be disrespectful about soil an actual slasher has walked across.”
Having read Son of Rosemary, I cannot overstate how heartily I co-sign this statement.

Once Burned (Night Prince, #1)
Really enjoying this, and it’s a lovely contrast to the book I just tapped out on. Yes, this book seems designed to reassure me, you do love a villainous MMC, as long as he’s over the top villainous instead of just reminding you of crappy mundane people you hate IRL.

“She'd always hated exercises like these. They made people resentful, because they essentially yanked the carpet out from under you while simultaneously making you feel as if it were your fault for failing to remain upright.”
What an absolute banger characterization of getting-to-know-you icebreaker exercises.

As in A Series of Unfortunate Events, the most loathsome characters aren’t even the villains. They’re the “voices of reason,” telling the MCs to calm down, be polite, and stop being so paranoid. I’m not going to feel the least bit bad for James when he bites it.

It’s so fun when the characters who are probably doomed are just insufferable enough that you can’t help looking forward to their likely demise (even if they’re just normal enough that you know you’re probably going to feel bad about it).
