it’s actually kinda messed up how well he nails a young woman’s voice………

the last part (which def felt a bit rushed) was that much more heartbreaking knowing what we do know about her passing—I hope she finds more peace on the other side with her brother 🕊️ also feeling for her parents as well

starting this on the mid-autumn festival feels v good despite the content being v sad thus far 😌🌕🥮

I think it’s more of a 3.75 for me, but I’m going to round up to a 4—had fun with this and felt there were some strong passages around ~humanity/human nature~ that I enjoyed. thankful for books & stories!!

omg I thought the Seattle public library finally gave me the boot but praise be, their online system/Libby was just down 🙌🏼 we’re soooo back and I’m about to get started on this as I drive down to louisville for the circa survive reunion at LTL 🥲🖤 truly love the concept of a rock music fest being at a place of/adjacent to amusement 🎢 (see also bellwether @ the ren faire…RIP)

you truly hate to see it—especially because his other two novels were essentially five star home runs :\

I just truly did not care about anything that was going on, which made the typically (and enjoyably) overstuffed prose drag in a way that I could not get behind

I will still pick up fresh complaint/his next venture but I’m so sad about this one for sure

okay yeah idk man… I think if this weren’t Him, I might have dnf’d already but I will see this through…

doesn’t have quite the instantaneous sparkle I saw in TVS and Middlesex, but I’m obvi going to see it through

a difficult one to rate. I don’t regret my time with this, but idk if I really Liked it tbh. Something very pessimistic and existential (obviously a fellow araki head) and some tasty turns of phrase (“the effigy of Christ presiding over this paltry court of our anguish” delightful 2 me) but overall…kinda go girl give us nothing underneath the grief & nonmonogamy pitches 🤷🏻‍♀️

this is a bit of a hard one to rate for me because I think this is really good and don’t really find any faults with it, but it didn’t give me the ~five star feeling~

So please know this is more like a 4.5 for me! really appreciated the way in which this was written as well—I have always hated when people tried to sand down how “voicey” I write, and I felt #seen by this author’s style

hmm this is an interesting one. Though I was pretty locked in while reading its messy contents and think it does have a decent character arc for our protagonist, I couldn’t shake how my secondhand embarrassment I felt for her, being 31 and hopelessly in love with a (legal but still kinda weird) 17 year old girl….. and being a terrible friend, addict, and aspiring DJ at that. Like sister….lol

(affectionately) these messy ass lesbians…

rounding up to a 4; I feel like it was an effective oral history, but some of the stories were told across multiple chapters so it felt a bit messy at times when they were brought up again. anyway, luv a schwartz & savage joint and love that their production company name is so clearly a reference to the national
