delighted at the concept of world building lore being delivered to the reader via someone mansplaining it to the (more knowledgeable!) protagonist

and thus another book goes onto my currently reading list to die. i cannot for the life of me finish it, but i still have hope that maybe one day i will. (i won't. i viscerally hate this author and all i know about him comes from the 320 pages of the book i have forced myself through. whatever i dont even careeeee

the prose in this book. truly umwerfend. we can all learn something from this absolute genius of style

I've talked about how boring this book is, but I literally gasped when a specific character died, so. perhaps it has some merit

this book is undoubtedly going to be 5/5 stars but the phrase "his meat is a vibrant salmon" is ROUGH like a man just got viscerally pepper-sprayed in the dick for a whole page, I don't think you have to use a euphemism for it at that point

I don't think it was supposed to be funny but the sentence "by chance, nothing in the American arboretum could better suit what baby Charles will grow into: a towering, straight-grained thing whose nuts are so hard you have to smash them with a hammer" is killing me

if youre gonna write a book longer than the lord of the rings in the 21st century I feel like it's not to much to ask that you have better politics than a British white guy in the 1950s.. the unspeakable disappointment of a disabled and long exiled character asking for help not bc of the pain he's in or lack of community thru exile, but bc he's too ugly for women to be attracted to him (his words!!),, like girl what!

it's giving "major leagues boring in the way only a german man can be" so far... like go on girl give us nothing (protagonist meets and falls in love with a women in less than a page, a woman whose only use so far has been to motivate the guy to push for the goal he was ALREADY pushing for)

I like the premise so I'll keep going but.... thin ice

it's giving "german class" so intensely that I think I would have actually preferred reading this in highschool, just to be able to complain about it with other people and then get a good grade for pointing out all the tryhard symbolism
