I don't know why, but I keep picturing a human version of Captain Amelia from "Treasure Planet."

This book just made me actually gasp. It's been a while since a book has elicited such a reaction from me. This is a great reading experience so far.

"Even in the best of circumstances, we aren’t all going to make it.”
“Well,” Gineos said. “I assume you’re already planning to eat my body first.”
“It will be a noble sacrifice you’ll be making, Captain.”
“I can’t tell whether you’re joking or not, Ollie.”

Inverr flipped open his own communication circuit. “Hybern, this is XO Inverr. Is there a problem understanding the captain’s orders?”
“Weren’t we having a mutiny?” Hybern asked.

A lot of exposition in the opening, but it's still so good. I love how it goes from an attempted mutiny to the crew probably needing to come together and try to avoid disaster.

This girl is like a bull, just throwing herself at red flags.

I'm reading an ARC version, and just realized that in the blurb, Rhys Bowen praises the book's main character as "a sassy, savvy sleuth." Except she calls the main character "Eloise." 😅 Her name is Evelyn! What a blunder. And they put that on the ARC cover!

Just noting two breadcrumbs: suspicious bottle of Phelityl Oil and the claim that the costume jewelry is nice enough to trick people into thinking it is genuine.

I'm really hoping this doesn't turn out having Liz as the killer. It really wouldn't make sense and would negate her POV chapters unless she's completely delusion and lying even in her thoughts. I'm thinking it must be Eva and she faked her death.

Yep. The book really has this glorious line. And no, it's not a text message or email. It is supposed to be a POV character's inner monologue. Ruth, you're a big girl. You can write out the F word (or just not include it) instead of pretending people think in acronyms.

“You could be Shaun White, mate, you still wouldn’t be going down there. You didn’t see it—it looked like a boulder field. There’s no piste left.”

"I’ve got some arnica in my bag,” Tiger calls after him. I cannot hear Danny’s reply. It does not sound complimentary.
“I don’t think arnica is going to cut it, Tig,” Rik says quietly.

"There’s only one thing I hate more than f--king stealth vegans and that’s wankers.”

Well, it was nice knowing you, Amos. I have a sinking feeling something bad is about to happen to him.

Two hours later, Miller finished the last of his paperwork and sent Dowd off to the cells.
Three and a half hours later, the first of his docking log requests came in.
Five hours later, the government of Ceres collapsed.

"Torpedo launches?" Holden said, "Guess those Belt ships didn't change course."
[...] the general quarters Klaxon sounded. It was deafening in the small metal compartment.
"Holy shit, did they shoot back?" Holden asked.

"Can we do that?' he asked.
"Do what?" Holden asked.
"Get drunk and cry like babies?"
"Hell yes. That is officially on the schedule for tonight. Report to the galley at twenty hundred hours, Mr. Garvey. Bring a cup."
