“Those upper classes, to rule, needed to make concessions to the middle class, without damage to their own wealth or power, at the expense of slaves, Indians, and poor whites…the ruling group found in the 1760/70s a wonderfully useful device: the language of liberty and equality, which could unite just enough whites to fight a revolution against England, without ending either slavery or inequality”

“Only one fear was greater than the fear of black rebellion in the new American colonies: that was the fear that discontented whites would join black slaves to overthrow the existing order”.

I’m gonna make several updates of my favorite quotes so far, but the main theme running through American history is: the unequal distribution of wealth was purposefully instilled, and is a tool, used to ensure oppression of the lower classes. This was not necessarily a shocking revelation to me, I mean I do live in America lol, but it was disturbing how deeply ingrained it is.

Reading this for class. One chapter in and I already read the most disgustingly misogynistic page of literature I have ever read. Which is disturbing… because I’ve read lots of ancient literature and this was written in the 90s
