The first chapter or so was pretty insufferable American exceptionalist self indulgence, but it progressed past this wankery it has turned into an incredibly enjoyable and well written account of the high politics of the early republic. The author seems under the impression this encapsulates all that is important about the period tho which is a bit disconcerting for something written in 2008 rather than 1950.

Great so far. Full of fascinating anecdotes and insights , with the real strength seeming to lay in comparison between different nations on matters from transport infrastructure to political culture. Less good on the narrative of events by country which can get a bit confusing (especially as it is thematically rather than narratively organised).

Just got the reformation. Absolutely banging - tremendous fun and incredibly insightful.
