So far really good. Lots of discussion about how US action in Latin America has lead to mass migration, something seldom talked about when we talk about “illegal immigration”. I’ve also learned a lot about the annexation of Texas and how the US essentially invaded Mexico and annexed modern California, Arizona, New Mexico, etc. in the name of capital and “Manifest Destiny”.

Rereading this one because i first read it as an audio book. I remember feeling like someone was putting words feelings that i didn’t have the vocabulary or awareness to say myself, and so far i am not disappointed

“The Supreme Court, he found, had heard 604 Fourteenth amendment cases between 1868 and 1912. A mere 28 of those cases involved African-Americans, the group whose plight motivated the adoption of the amendment, and in nearly all of those cases, the racial minorities lost…[while] more than half… - 312 in total - involved corporations.”

I have had this book on my shelf for probably 3 years now and I’ve been putting off reading it fearing that it would be very dry, but it’s actually really interesting. Looking forward to reading the rest

“There are, …, countries that have “unleashed a series of petty attacks against their neighbors” in these years – for example, Israel, with its invasion of Lebanon in 1978 and 1982-but as an American client state, Israel inherited the right of aggression,…, Israel’s invasion of Lebanon was a “liberation,” as the Times explained at the time, always carefully excluding Lebanese opinion.”

This book is one of the most eye opening books I’ve ever read and I’m only 30% through. Chapter 1 has a description of the US Propaganda model. Chomsky discusses the importance of a free press in democratic society, and how mass media has lead to the consolidation of the press under the umbrella of big business, the government, and the wealthy. It has largely become a machine for controlling public opinion.
