i was so scared to read this book but this may by the easiest most fluid 700 page book i’ve ever read. his writing style is so much more effective here than in “a shining” because it has the room to talk about the everything and nothing it wants to talk about

im lowkey amazed i gave this 5 stars 5 years ago, i find it harder to lean into its acerbic commentary about structures of power when it misaligns the “black boys”/orderlies as sadistic perpetrators of systemic abuse, as though black ppl are not most vulnerable in america’s culture of incarceration…

i watched good will hunting yesterday and i loved it but i have the exact same problem i had with that that i have here — just because you’ve read a thousand books on the subject matter and understand non-euclidean geometry doesn’t mean you need to prove to the audience how smart you are and how much you read

i cannot get myself to finish this book bc i'm too busy scrolling myself to death UGHHH

not totally sure how to feel abt this so far. i like a detached narrator as much as the next person but the main character is going through so many traumatic things at once but narrating so flatly it’s hard to feel the magnitude of anything. i can already feel her obsession w catherine deneuve kicking in though, interested to see where this goes

literally only have 30 pages left of this but had to return it today because there are like 20 ppl waiting on it 💔

maybe one of the hardest things i’ve read in quite some time, absolutely harrowing. reminds me of the movie “i’m not here” in the way it depicts the simultaneous horror and human connection under a military regime, except this one does not shy away from depicting the very real violence that took place and wow it is not easy to read by any means, i want to finish it but i keep having to put it down

kind of the best book ever

the previous owner of this book has outlined this page where stevens studies other people’s ‘witticisms’ and rehearses them to perform in conversation and has annotated “on the spectrum ?” & i was like i don’t think that necessarily means he’s autistic i think that’s a normal thing to do i do that all the time and then i remembered i am also autistic so. maybe they have a point

i feel pressure to like this because i like ishiguro’s other works but never got around to this one & it’s so widely renowned but at the same time i want to like it because i like it not because i should like it yk

spending pages describing rachael as childlike and then immediately proceeding to a sex scene is certainly a choice … not one i would make personally but i’m not a male science fiction writer in 1968
