yáng has fabricated such an authentic story i once found it hard to read through the layers of translation but now it all feels so real. impressive entrenchment in history. the relationship between aoyama and chizuru feels both intimate and microcosmic, every dialogue they exchange press against their respective emotions and wider colonial tensions, but seamlessly never feels didactic. fearful of the ending…

took me some time to get into the writing style and colonial perspective of our dear fictitious novelist aoyama, but it has been really lovely to see her relationship with chizuru develop.. ❤️‍🩹 i particularly like the motif of the “noh mask” that aoyama asserts onto chizuru and the way it reflects both of their behaviors

please arkady martine, put down the italics…
italics are used for thoughts, jargon, and emphasis, so the effect of italicising just loses its emphasis on all of these. if the story/dialogue were clearer, the stress on words would be self-evident. i find it disappointing a story filled with linguistic interest depends so heavily on formatting over construction

i understand part-memoir part-essay is the bread & butter for marketable non-fiction these days but this one is a little too heavy on the self-importance, i find myself having to weed through a lot of chatter to get to the actual info i want
