yáng has fabricated such an authentic story i once found it hard to read through the layers of translation but now it all feels so real. impressive entrenchment in history. the relationship between aoyama and chizuru feels both intimate and microcosmic, every dialogue they exchange press against their respective emotions and wider colonial tensions, but seamlessly never feels didactic. fearful of the ending…

took me some time to get into the writing style and colonial perspective of our dear fictitious novelist aoyama, but it has been really lovely to see her relationship with chizuru develop.. ❤️🩹 i particularly like the motif of the “noh mask” that aoyama asserts onto chizuru and the way it reflects both of their behaviors
