constance’s cadence is so eerie, i don’t want to believe what the townsfolk say about constance and merricat because i believe this book follows the same criticism of blind mass movement of hatred/violence as the lottery, but the placating tone and repeated “you’re so silly, merricat” starts to feels more disconcerting than comforting

prologue (chapter 0) is so so pop feminist i hope it does not maintain the “cozy up, dear reader” (real quote) tone from here on

i dont like updating my goodreads because it forces me to confront the fact i legitimately read 5+ books at once but i can’t help it… this book is hard to read (both for dense academic writing, and use of real life violence against women as examples) but a really really good ameliorative definition of misogyny + accurately characterises inherent hostility

this chapter ‘final girl: extreme violence, sex in post-9/11 america’ was so intense i had to skim it or else i would throw up on the bus

anthony bourdain jpeg. once you’ve learned anything about misogyny you’ll never stop wanting to beat the porn industry to death with your bare hands

slogging my way through this rn. reads like an uninteresting eastern european parallel with oddly positioned prose. it’s fine but i’m just going to speed through the rest because neither the murder nor the city mysteries intrigue me. can totally see how disco elysium was inspired by this but i think disco elysium handles urban mythologies with a lot more intrigue

i was so scared to read this book but this may by the easiest most fluid 700 page book i’ve ever read. his writing style is so much more effective here than in “a shining” because it has the room to talk about the everything and nothing it wants to talk about

im lowkey amazed i gave this 5 stars 5 years ago, i find it harder to lean into its acerbic commentary about structures of power when it misaligns the “black boys”/orderlies as sadistic perpetrators of systemic abuse, as though black ppl are not most vulnerable in america’s culture of incarceration…

i watched good will hunting yesterday and i loved it but i have the exact same problem i had with that that i have here — just because you’ve read a thousand books on the subject matter and understand non-euclidean geometry doesn’t mean you need to prove to the audience how smart you are and how much you read

i cannot get myself to finish this book bc i'm too busy scrolling myself to death UGHHH

not totally sure how to feel abt this so far. i like a detached narrator as much as the next person but the main character is going through so many traumatic things at once but narrating so flatly it’s hard to feel the magnitude of anything. i can already feel her obsession w catherine deneuve kicking in though, interested to see where this goes

literally only have 30 pages left of this but had to return it today because there are like 20 ppl waiting on it 💔
