I did not know that the grassroots opposition to war that reached its zenith in 1910 was torn asunder by the industry push to World War 1.

Having been acquainted with his philosophy through his introductions to a Nietzsche anthology and an existentialism reader, I expected to enjoy Kaufmann – but I am LOVING this book. Kaufmann is a master of understating his insights. He never dwells on a point for the sake of completeness. His writing reminds me very much of Bernard Williams for its clarity, concision, and perspicacity.

Wolin's biographical exposition of the intellectual and romantic relationships of Hannah Arendt and Heidegger is compelling and informative. Wolin also argues that Arendt got some things wrong in her thesis of the banality of evil, which I found very interesting. I will look into this line further, since I am interested to know more about the objections to Arendt's idea there.

What in the hells' bells is Hegel even trying to argue about? What is his subject matter? What is his thesis? Whom is he responding to? I cannot follow anything about this text. I need to put it on hold until I can find an introductory text to give Hegel's sentences some kind of sense.

An exquisite exercise in imagination. It reminds me of the wonder I felt when I first read "The Indian in the Cupboard" in grade four.

I like the very level-headed criticisms, but the author indulges in too much dog whistle rhetoric in between his criticism. For example, he communally makes pejorative references to the reductionist approach of contemporary economics, but this is just preaching to the choir. There isn't any reason given for why methodological reductionism is itself undesirable or incorrect or unhelpful. The author seems to want to pr

Very depressing! I need to take a break from this book. I wish it were filled with continual reassurances about how to overcome our prima facie inability to grasp climate change.

Jesus monkey juice, this is tough reading. Thought Project. Kierkegaard is speaking as a ventriloquist in Johannes Climacus who writes technical Danish words (‘blev til’ versus ‘er til’) while referring to Socratic conceptions in allusions to Hegel, Schilling, und so weiter.
