Wondering if Jacob's sexism is one part internalised gender norms on the part of Meyer (how she thinks a normal guy thinks), one part her own anti blonde women agenda. Not saying this isn't how guys typically think, but holy shit anyone who sympathises with this guy needs a GOOD explanation because hs.

I knew that Jacob kissed Bella to prove that she was in denial about loving him but that was the most triggering sequence of conversations and I dare to say, the movie did it a lot better. Charlie takes some massive Ls in this book- like when he finds out Bella hit Jacob after he kissed her, and Charlie just goes "atta boy make your move son, don't mind my silly girl."

It's weird that Charlie will never take Bella's side when her and Jacob argue, and he doesn't ask about what happened. If he did, he would know that Jacob told her she's better off dead, she's an idiot, and he also assaults her. Jacob and Edward are the two guys you hate to be around, one is insecure and needs you to validate him, the other is nonchalant TM.

For all the "problematic" stuff in Twilight, one thing that I've never heard anyone talk about is Jacob aging 10 years after turning into a werewolf. He's "physically grown to 25." Age gap relationships are endlessly critiqued in vampire fiction (I'm personally laissez-faire about it) and yet no one questions Jacob being 25. Idk, is he MENTALLY 25??

If there was a paranormal romance revival coming out in the next half of the 2020's, there's a few things I would like it to add that Twilight is not doing: 1. Female frienships, 2. stronger relationships with direct family members because even though the romantic relationship is the main object of conflict in the series, I still can't wrap my head around this 17 y/o being the most important person in Bella's life.

Still hoping a little bit that the "stay far away from Orion Lake" had a better, more mysterious reason. If Gwen sent the message after seeing her daughter almost getting murdered, then yeah, no kidding stay away! Otherwise, why not explain a little in the message "this guy is a murderer?"

Very literary. I have to recommend it to anyone interested in family/family trauma or psychology. There's a lot of writing about what family dynamics DO to you, and this analysis of the small things: the mom's piano, the dad's architecture, Bechdel's symbols in her diary- create something so vastly complex and real about family, more than the recounting of dramatic events.
